Why I Quit Movie Pass Today

I am just not that into you anymore Movie Pass

*** Update *** Movie Pass is now reportedly limiting customers to three movies per month, moving away from price increases, ending peak pricing, and loosening but not ending the ban on first-run blockbusters *** Update ***

Remember that first time you used Movie Pass and it felt like an amazing combination of getting away with something and having access to a secret loophole that very few people knew about?

Well, despite being with Movie Pass since back when they only had hundreds of thousands of members, today I cancelled my subscription.

Why?

This one is pretty simple:

  1. Today Movie Pass announced it was raising its base price to $14.95
  2. Movie Pass, despite the price increase, is continuing Peak Pricing (where it charges you even more for any movie it decides is being shown at a peak time…Lately, that has meant every movie with a surcharge up to $7.00).
  3. Movie Pass, despite the price increase and doubling down on peak pricing, is continuing to block members from seeing “blockbusters” (defined as any movie being shown on more than 1000 screens nationwide, in other words, virtually any movie most people actually want to see).
