Why I am NOT Watching the Emmys
The ONE reason I absolutely refuse to watch the Primetime Emmy Awards Tonight
Look, I am pretty mad that Sam Esmail was not nominated for Best Director and that Rami Malek was not nominated for best actor in a dramatic role.
However, there is only one reason I absolutely refused to watch the Prime Time Emmy Awards tonight.
That reason has a name, and that name is Michael McKean.
Some of us are old enough to remember him as Lenny on Laverne and Shirley (which came on after Happy Days when I was a kid).
Most people, I suspect, became familiar with him as Spinal Tap’s abusrdist singer/guitarist David St. Hubbins (others may remember him from most all of Christopher Guest’s other mockumentaries).
But, in my humble opinion, the best work that he has ever done (in a very long and distinguished career) was turned in playing the character Charles McGill during Season 3 of AMC’s Better Call Saul.
Better Call Saul is a show with a great cast, great writers, and one of the best showrunners of all-time in Vince Gilligan (and all of them were great this year) and yet, all of them were eclipsed by the sublime performance of Chuck by Mr. McKean.
And, of course, he wasn’t even nominated (although a few of his co-stars were).
