Recipients of the Prestigious “Wile E. Coyote Award For Super-Genius”

Winners!

Whenever appropriate, I present this award in loving memory of the perpetually late-great Wile E. Coyote “Super-Genius”

President Donald J. Trump “Business Genius” — WINNER!

Today’s first recipient managed to promise something he did not have the power to deliver, forgive billions of dollars in Puerto Rican debt (roiling markets this morning). The President’s direct quote, during a Fox News interview was:

“We have to look at their whole debt structure…You know, they owe a lot of money to your friends on Wall Street, and we’re going to have to wipe that out. You can say goodbye to that. I don’t know if it’s Goldman Sachs, but whoever it is, you can wave goodbye to that.”

It was only a few hours later that the Administration was walking back the President’s statement publically.

I feel bad calling President Trump out for his comment, since I personally think that it would be both honorable and fair for the United States to find a way to bail out Puerto Rico’s debt. But, suggesting that the debt would be forgiven and that there would be no alternative payment scheme forthcoming was guaranteed to roil markets (in other words, it was the way that he said it, not the idea of forgiving debt itself that was problematic).

Generally, President’s understand that anything they say can have a real and immediate effect on markets. One would assume, given President Trump’s business background, he would be aware that straight-out promising to forgive debt, with no announcement of a plan, could cause problems.

James Inhofe “Climate-Expert” — WINNER!

Everyone remembers James Inhofe for the way he brilliantly explained that the atmosphere of our could not possibly be warming because there was snow on the ground during winter in Washington DC.

Global Warming SOLVED!

But today, he managed to be equally impressive (and award worthy), here is what he said in an interview with VOX:

In reference to why shootings happen Inhofe said:

“That has a lot more to do with [mass shootings] than gun owners laws, Inhofe told me. You can go ahead and break a law and you can come to a sanctuary city, and they wouldn’t enforce the laws.”

And, when asked, by interviewer Tara Golshan:

“So you’re saying the presence of sanctuary cities is perpetuating the culture of the Las Vegas shooting?”

Inhofe responded:

I’m saying we’re inundated with permissive laws that has a lot more to do with it than gun [ownership] laws. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s what I’m saying.

Wow!

Okay, that one just has to be left and fully savored and appreciated for its particularly pungently fascist odor. Congratulations James Inhofe! You have outdone yourself!

ABC News Headline Writer — WINNER!

Yup, it is hard to beat this for a “No-Duh” headline about the Las Vegas shooter, great work by ABC News!!!

Good job on the crack investigative work there, a guy who killed 59 people and injured hundreds more was “descending into madness.”

In other news, water is wet and grass is often green.

Okay, I have done all the damage I can do for today!
