Jason Loewenstein, “Spooky Action”

Every week I put out a new playlist on Spotify featuring as much new and underappreciated music as I can fit into a 60 minutes of less format (this week’s playlist is called the “Cred Reduction Agent” playlist).

This week, one of the songs that I featured was from Sebadoh guitarist Jason Loewenstein’s excellent second solo album “Spooky Action.

Spooky Action was released last month on Joyful Noise Recordings.

The song that I chose to include was “Light The Room” which is the last song on the album (and one of the only songs that is not upbeat musically).

I chose to include this song because it is a really great example of how the musical atmosphere of a song can put lyrics into a particular context.

In this particular example, the song starts with a dark discordant piano figure that repeats throughout the song counterpointing the singer’s admission that the person he is singing about “Lights the Room.” In other words, instead of your usual love song where someone opines on how amazing someone is, this song is about the pain of encountering someone you love after a break and realizing that they are still amazing (and amazingly not with you).

Beyond the song, I have always loved what Loewenstein brought to Sebadoh (he was part of my favorite Sebadoh album ever — 1993’s Bubble and Scrape).

Sebadoh, Bubble and Scrape

This has been a particular good couple of months for new music, hopefully 2017 continues to kick-out the jams (just this week I have covered the new Waxahatchee album, Dion Lunadon’s album, and Jason Loewenstein’s album).
