So, I feel like I say this every day here or somewhere else, but here we go again:
The War on Drugs has failed spectacularly to reduce supply (if you think about it for a moment, reducing supply is really the War on Drugs only job) since 1971.
No matter how many seizures they parade in front of the cameras the real end result has been the same amount of drugs (of all varieties) on the streets.
No matter how many dealers and bad men (and women) they have put behind bars the real end result, since prohibition makes selling drugs very lucrative, has only been changing deck chairs on the drug-dealer Titanic.
No matter how often they yap about drugs being immoral and availability representing an existential crisis, the real end result has only been to destroy communities, traumatize and ruin the lives of addicts, and generate mass incarceration (usually disproportionately against people of color).
No matter how often they drone on about the violence and the deaths and the need for militarized police and laying siege to cities and communities the real cause of the violence is prohibition itself.
In other words, the War on Drugs is “security theater” designed mostly for white public consumption and partially as a particularly brutal form of voter suppression.
I don’t do drugs (feel free to test me any time you want) but it is time to call out BS as BS, it is time to end America’s War On Drugs and end it NOW. I am not a radical, I am a realist, and we need to stop investing in failure and death.
BTW, the evidence overwhelmingly proves that Harm Reduction works much better than incarceration…In case you were wondering.
