This Week’s Playlist

I put out weekly playlists. I use Spotify because I have an easy time finding most of the music I want to include is there (and I hope that I can make some bands that I like a few extra bucks).

Training Chairman Mao for Florida (Details)

  1. Almost Had To Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience, Parquet Courts, Wide Awake! (2018, Rough Trade)

Parquet Courts will always be a Denton band to me. Yes, I know they are located in Brooklyn but A. Savage is a Denton Texas guy and I spent many of my college and professional years in Denton…So, they are a Denton Band! Anyway, I love Parquet Courts and this song is great fun.

2. Repeat It, The Lovely Eggs, This Is Eggland (2018, Rough Trade)

This song really lives its gimmick but in a very interesting way. Noisy, melodic, and repetitive in all the best possible ways. I dig this band and this album was one of about 20 good albums that came out last Friday (a large number are represented on this playlist).

3. Black Cross, Russian Baths, Penance EP (2018, Good Eye Records)

This song is from (maybe) my favorite of the many great EP’s and albums released last Friday. It has a great post-punk sadness but without ever really letting go of the urgency and energy of punk (it always sounds like there is an explosion waiting just beneath the surface of the tension of this song).

4. D.I. Cig, Surf Harp, Mr. Big Picture (2018, Friends Records)

I know very little about this band but I really dig the off-kilter post-punk aesthetic. A fun song and a nice wacky sunshine-filled counterpoint to the Russian Bath song above. Post-punk has a wide-emotional range to its jittery guitar-stylings people.

5. Big Smile, Turnstile, Time & Space (2018, Roadrunner Records)

YES! I am a sucker for any song that starts with a primal scream. Really great bridge between classic punk, 50’s rock riffs, and metal. Just a real kicker of a song. My head will not stop nodding and my toe will not stop tapping while this song is on .

6. Leaks, Superteen, Over Everything (2018, Sad Cactus)

Taking it down for just a few seconds with this song from Superteen. I love the bending note that haunts every second of this song (there is something pretty cool about building a whole song around this one bending flat note). I also like that the lyrics of the song are often sung in the style of a round.

7. Stop Moving To Florida, Melvins, Pinkus Abortion Technician (2018, IPECAC Recordings)

I dunno, I feel like I have been listening to Melvins forever. Not everyone loves them, they are a part of my musical family. A huge number of bands I like have a little bit of Melvins in them. This is from their forthcoming new album and is just as crazy as always.

Also, if you want to know where the home of the worst possible version of every law in America is enacted…The answer is almost always “In Florida.”

8. Finger It Out, Bethlehem Steel, Party Naked Forever (2017, Exploding In Sound Records)

Okay, maybe I resisted Bethlehem Steel’s latest album a bit because everyone else loved it. Sometimes I can be a bit contrary. It is a really great album and this is a really great song. Mea Culpa.

9. Universal Care, Kal Marks, Universal Care (2018, Exploding In Sound Records)

I really enjoyed this album. I have listened to it three times in about five days (which is a lot, even for me). This song fit really well here.

10. I Want It, The Nectars, Sci-Fi Television (2018)

Found this song on some playlist I was listening to. I liked it and it fit. So here it is, I think they hail from New Jersey and have had some major label interest (but what do I know?).

11. On The Block, Datenight US, Comin’ Atcha 100MPH (2018, Drop Medium)

I think I described this band on Twitter as The Ramones met No Age and spawned a speed metal leaning kid. Whatever they are, I really like it. Might be my favorite song on this playlist.

12. Chest, FRIGS, Basic Behavior (2018, Arts & Crafts)

This is the second FRIGS song I have put on a playlist this month. To be 100% honest, I was playing around with adding two others as well. I think what this means is that Basic Behavior is a really good album.

13. Anata Watashi, Otoboke Beaver, Single (2018, Damnably)

I have no idea what the actual title of this song is because I couldn’t get Google Translate to work for me. If you haven’t heard Otokobe Beaver, they are a really good all-girl Japanese punk band. Check them out!

14. I’ll Make You Sorry, Screaming Females, All At Once (2018, Don Giovani Recordings)

How great is this song. Sure they are more of a traditional rock and roll band, but they are really good at what they do. Really enjoyed the new album and this is flat out a great song.

15. Prom Song, Pile, Dripping (2012, Exploding In Sound Records)

Guess it is one of those weeks. Even the throwback songs that I added are from EIS Records (I am just too old to put nothing but 2018 songs on a list). Oh well, great album and Prom Song really fit well here.

16. Soft, Corey Flood, Wish You Hadn’t EP (2018, Fire Talk)

This is another song I liked after I heard it on a suggestion list somewhere. I felt like it was a perfect transition into the next song. Anyway, I enjoyed it and am listening to the EP as I type.

17. Heart of Hearts, Anna McClellan, Yes and No (2018, Father/Daughter Records)

Everyone was buzzing about this album last week and I have to agree that it is pretty spectacularly different and fun. Great place to end the playlist (one of my favorites of the last year).
