The weekly playlist (apologies for it being late this week)

I put out weekly playlists. I use Spotify because I have an easy time finding most of the music I want to include is there (and I hope that I can make some bands that I like a few extra bucks).

<You can follow me on Spotify at Ypsifactj>

The Songs

  1. How Did This Happen, Bodega, Single (What’s Your Rupture, 2018)

This song was the root of the whole playlist, loved the commentary and the questioning of the basic premise of Woody Guthrie’s famous statement about his guitar (“This Machine Kills Fascists”). Good young NYC band.

2. The Club, Hinds, Single (Lucky Number Music, 2018)

Not always a huge fan of Hinds but this song really grabbed me. This is one of the singles off the forthcoming album “I Don’t Run.”

3. Choking To Choose, Cable Ties, Maxi-Single (Poison City Records, 2018)

One of the many Australian bands absolutely killing it right now, Cable Ties just continue to pump out new and impressive material every year. A really tight, well-constructed, foot-stomper.

4. Abandonment, Bad Breeding, Abandonment Ep (One Little Indian Records, 2018)

Just some more super angry, loud, cathartic and political noise from the great UK band Bad Breeding. Just the way I like it. More Please!

5. Degrees, Stef Chura, Maxi-Single (Saddle Creek Records, 2018)

This single is a bit of a departure for Detroit’s Stef Chura, this song seems like it is either an aberration or a sign of a new (perhaps) louder direction for the always interesting Chura. Interestingly enough, this single was produced (and had many of the instruments played by) the ubiquitous Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest fame.

6. Set To Attack, Albert Hammond Jr., Francis Trouble (Red Bull Records, 2018)

Have yet to hear one song that I didn’t enjoy off of this new “Francis Trouble” album by Albert Hammond Jr. I suspect that is why this is the third time I have put one of his new songs on one of my playlists?

7. Rewind, The Amazing, Single (Partisan Records, 2018)

Including this on the playlist was a bit of a departure for me, maybe a bit more…Twee…than I usually include. However, I did like this song by this Swedish super-group and it fit pretty well as a bridge into the next section/song.

8. Get The F**ck Off My D*ck, Vince Staples, Single (Def Jam, 2018)

Nobody is ever going to accuse Vince Staples of being subtle (least of all me). I don’t always agree with everything he is saying, but I am glad someone is really willing to put themselves out there and mix-it-up in critically charged spaces.

9. Strand of Steve-O, Ovlov, Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (Exploding In Sound, 2017)

Guess I missed a lot of the Ovlov hype if they are at the greatest hits stage (ironical?). In all seriousness, I have liked a lot of their music. Anyway, good song, like the guitar work.

10. Gym Birds, Pope, True Talent Champion (Community Records, 2017)

Another one of those found songs that I had stashed away until I found a place for it to fit on one of the playlists. Pope, your time is now.

11. To Me, Trupa Trupa, Jolly New Songs (Ici d’ailleurs, 2017)

This Trupa Trupa song might be my favorite on the playlist, I love the old school 90’s soft/loud dynamic and the intensity. Great stuff.

12. Burnin’ For You, Blue Oyster Cult, Fire of Unknown Origin (1981)

I had to close out the playlist with some irony (see nostalgia). To be 100%, there is a band I really loved in Arizona (Dead Hot Workshop) who played a ripping cover of this song, and I was feeling nostalgia..hence the irony.
