This Weeks Spotify Playlist

I put out weekly playlists. I use Spotify because I have an easy time finding most of the music I want to include is there (and I hope that I can make some bands that I like a few extra bucks).

<You can follow me on Spotify at Ypsifactj>

I used to be a mediocre DJ back in the day (which might be an overly kind assessment of my skills). I try to emphasize brand new music from the Punk, Post-punk, Electronic, Alternative Hip-Hop, and Garage genres.

This week’s playlist title was inspired by the passing of Dolores O’ Riordan (the singer for the band the Cranberries) being followed immediately by the passing of someone whose music I followed for most of my adult life Mark E. Smith of the UK Post-Punk band The Fall…RIP.

Sometimes You Need A Mind Eraser

  1. Eraser, Odonis Odonis, No Pop (2017)

One of my favorite bands, strongly suggest you see them live, great record great fun.

2. Exhibitionism, Institute, Subordination (2017)

This album is one of my current favorites, it didn’t make my “Best of 2017” list because I first heard Subordination after I put the list out. Was a big fan of their Salt EP…this is a consistently great punk music outfit. Kudos.

3. Sludgefucker, The Royal They, Foreign Being (2018)

The good folks at Post-Trash turned me on to this band. They included this song in a great compilation they put out to benefit the people of Puerto Rico. So, if you like this song, you should check out their benefit compilation.

4. Freedom, Rage Against The Machine, Rage Against The Machine (1992)

Whenever I think of Rage Against The Machine, this is the song that jumps into my mind. Loved the Leonard Peltier video, love the call out to justified anger, and love the FREEEEEEDOMMMMMMMM roar. Great song.

5. Pakistani Brain, Armand Hammer, Rome (2017)

Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name) and Armand Hammer (Rome) are not, as far as I can tell, the same person (although they are both technically named Armand). Anyway, I love underground hip-hop, this is great underground hip-hop.

6. TV, Naked Giants, Single (2018)

Really loved this bands EP and I am very much looking forward to their forthcoming new album. Just another young band playing great music coming out of Seattle.

7. Cute Thing, Car Seat Headrest, Twin Fantasy (2018)

Yes, two weeks in a row of Car Seat Headrest. Couldn’t resist, especially after I heard the line about wishing he had Frank Ocean’s voice and James Brown’s stage presence. That is kind of a great metaphor for how I feel about life in general.

8. Wild Child, Shopping, The Official Body (2018)

Another really great ska-heavy post-punk record from Great Britain’s Shopping. If you haven’t had the pleasure before and you like a ska-groove in your post-punk cup of coffee, this could be your new favorite band.

9. All My Fears, ShitKid, This Is It EP (2018)

ShitKid comes from Sweden but would have fit right in with the 1980’s early British post-punk scene or even the late 1970’s NYC scene. Minimalist but constantly interesting.

10. No Fun, Moon Duo, Jukebox Babe/No Fun Single (2018)

The Moon Duo I know was a synth heavy duo, I really wasn’t expecting this lo-fi homage to The Stooges but it hit me in just the right way at just the right time to…Make The List.

11. Dark Shadows, EMA, Single (2018)

The cover and single seem heavily Nico influenced which fits right in after a Stooges cover. Good song!

12. Ripe Ripe Rot, Liars, TFCF (2017)

Not sure why I have never included a Liars song until this week (after 100’s of playlists). Oh well, here is a great recent song by Liars.

13. Fictional Decision, Drahla, Fictional Decision Single (2017)

Might be my favorite newly found song on the playlist. Really good stuff from Drahla. Loved their last EP and this makes me hungry for more new music.

14 Walking In The Dark, Escape-ism, Introduction to Escape-ism (2017)

Just ran into this album accidentally, really enjoying it so far, hope you will too.

15. Victoria, The Fall, The Frenz Experiment (1988)

I am kind of at a loss here, I have listened to the music of The Fall almost as long as I have been seriously listening to music. Mark E. Smith was a cranky often impenetrable but frequently entertaining front man and band leader. I already miss knowing he is out there somewhere planning his next bizarre album.

RIP Mark E Smith!
