This Week’s Spotify Playlist (2.22)

I put out weekly playlists. I use Spotify because I have an easy time finding most of the music I want to include is there (and I hope that I can make some bands that I like a few extra bucks).

<You can follow me on Spotify at Ypsifactj>

I used to be a mediocre DJ back in the day (which might be an overly kind assessment of my skills). I try to emphasize brand new music from the Punk, Post-punk, Electronic, Alternative Hip-Hop, and Garage genres.

Big Wilma’s Tin Glow

  1. Lemon Glow, Beach House, Single (2018)

Beach House released a B-Sides and Rarities album last year and two albums in 2016 (including my 2016 album of the year Depression Cherry). A few days ago, they released this single and said it was from their forthcoming album (they didn’t share what the name of the new album will be).

I do love me some Beach House!

2. Don’t Move Back To LA, Okkervil River, In The Rainbow Rain (2018)

Similarly, this is one of the first singles from the new Okkervil River album which will be released on April 27th. I have been listening to this band and it’s alternative permutations for a long time (I was a big fan of Shearwater’s last album). Lots of good new stuff being released early in 2018.

3. Nameless Faceless, Courtney Barnett, Tell Me How You Really Feel (2018)

I love Courtney Barnett, in particular I love how she acts like she doesn’t care much about anything but if you pay attention to her lyrics (and I do) it is obvious how much consideration she puts into everything she does. There is a really cool video she released for this song too (I will add it at the end).

4. New Day, The Surfing Magazines, Self-Titled (2017)

What an awesome song, I have no idea how I found this band but I sure am glad that I did. Seriously, really cool band, highly recommended.

5. Far Away Truths, Albert Hammond Jr., Francis Trouble (2018)

I geek out for Albert Hammond Jr. I loved The Strokes and think his guitar sound was a really big part of their sound (reminds me of a happier Verlaine). Anyway, this is the second single from his forthcoming new album that I have included.

6. Gelatinous Cube, Thee Oh Sees, A Weird Exits (2016)

Thee Oh Sees are another one of those really prolific bands that never seems to make any bad music. I generally dislike the self-indulgence of psychedelic music, but they really speak to me anyway. Maybe it is that they have a punk edge to their noodling?

7. Do You Remember?, Husker Du, Savage Young Du (2017)

Savage Young Du was the incredible re-mastered box set that was released last year and it has FINALLY made its way (partially) to Spotify. I grew up listening to Husker Du and they are one of my favorite all-time bands. Unfortunately we lost drummer, songwriter, and singer Grant Hart last year. RIP Grant Hart.

8. Les Be In Love, Surfbort, Single (2018)

I am probably going to find out later that this song has some immaturity in the lyrics. If so, I apologize in advance, but it is a really catchy tune (I didn’t look up the lyrics in advance).

9. Big Wilma, Warmduscher, Single (2018)

Don’t know much about this band but I heard this song on one of Spotify’s algorithmically constructed personal playlists and damn is Spotify didn’t have me nailed. Great stuff from…Warmduscher?

10. No Remark, Duds, Of a Nature or Degree (2017)

Duds, kind of like them. This is really good classic post-punk stuff. Very cool song.

11. Type, Omni, Multi-Task (2017)

Speaking of really good classic post-punk sounds, Atlanta’s Omni are another great band that resembles that remark. This is the third time I have had them on a playlist since releasing Multi-Task (so they must be pretty good).

12. Ruby, Charly Bliss, Guppy (2017)

Another album that was in consideration for my best of 2017 list but just missed the cut (I used to do a top 40 albums list and Guppy would certainly have made my top 40 list). This is a well-crafted song that fit perfectly here.

13. Editions Of You, Filthy Friends, Any Kind Of Crowd (2017)

This was the last song I found before finalizing the playlist. I was listening to a string of random songs and found myself hitting replay over and over again…so, here it is. Another band I don’t know much about but I like their sound.

12. Tin, Spinning Coin, Permo (2017)

I rarely include the same song on two different playlists. For some reason, I didn’t even consider this before including Tin for a second time (it made a playlist last year). I guess that means I really like this song.

13. Green, Young Jesus, Young Jesus (2017)

Yet another song I heard randomly and liked so much I just had to include it on this list. Might be my favorite song on the entire playlist. I need to do a bunch of listening and reading about several of the bands this week.

14. A.C., Lowtide, Southern Mind (2018)

This one had a bit of the late 80’s early 90’s “The Cure” guitar sound to me (and that was one of my favorite periods in The Cure’s discography). There are a lot of other good things going on here. This struck me as a pretty good song to fade away to.

Okay another week down, here is that Courtney Barnett video:
