No offense, you are a good writer, and I enjoyed reading your piece, but I emphatically disagree.

The problems with the DNC go way beyond any issue agenda and are as much about lack of competence (perhaps post-Obama hubris) as anything else. This is

  • a group that let a massive 2008 technology advantage flip entirely to the other side within one election cycle
  • a group that lost the voter suppression debate in the public square despite being 100% on the right side of the issue and having a core constituency at risk.
  • a group that lost the battle for unions in the public square despite being at least 80% on the right side of the issue. Oh, and unions were maybe the key groups supporting Democratic candidates nationwide.
  • a group that lost Statehouse battle after battle across the country and then watched gerrymandering create a situation where 2016 became possible.
  • a group that lost the battle for Public Schools in State after State despite being 120% on the right side of the issue. Oh, and teachers unions were another key constituency.

I could go on, but they were out to lunch during virtually every basic strategic battle with the GOP over the last five years. Despite that, a terrible campaign strategy that ignored key firewall states, massive interference from Russia (which the DNC also failed to deal with effectively), and a third party campaign that targeted only Democrats, HRC still won the popular vote and almost won the election.

Sure, I agree neoliberalism mostly sucks but of the top 100 problems the DNC faces, the issue agenda is probably near #100.

Also, the best way for us to get 8 years of Trump would be for us to continue the Progressive vs. Democrat split. We should commit right now to always suggesting positive alternatives and ways for us all to come together to make the party better. There are way too many real bodies at stake in this battle for us to keep this nonsense up. It is time to heal and fix this party now.

My suggestion is for all of us to realize that we need a much stronger technological effort, a much better strategic awareness, and to bring back the incredible forces that created the Obama online get-out-the-vote machine in 2008. Okay, we could also do a better job on the issue agenda as well.
