Five Albums I Liked This Week

I Really Do Hate Radio Today

Let me warn you ahead of time, you will not have heard most of these artists (or if you have, kudos). I generally hate most of what passes for ‘popular’ music these days, so I dig.

I believe in music written and sung by musicians for the purpose of being able to play it (sometimes even live). While I do enjoy a great deal of electronic music, I generally appreciate people who are able to play their music too.

In order to make you do literally zero work, I will include links to everything you need to enjoy each of the artists.

It is New Music Friday, so let’s dive into some of the albums that I really enjoyed this week:

Wand ‘Plum’

I am Endorsing the Album Not The Art

If you are not familiar with Wand (the band fronted by Cory Hanson), you have been missing out. This is, I believe, their fourth album and I have been on board since album one. Some people consider them a psych-rock band, and I guess that is as apt a label as any genre, but they are much more than one style of music (also, I hate strict genre rules).

Here is the aptly named Plum:

Washer ‘All Aboard’

Washer is another band I have liked since the first time I ever heard them, the Brooklyn Duo has a lo-fi style (you can feel the Pavement) but still get enough depth of sound to occasionally sound a bit like Mudhoney or early Soundgarden.

Dreamdecay ‘Yu’

Kind of came across this album accidentally, but I sure am glad that I did, Yu is a burner. Discordant and difficult in all the best ways. This is music to listen to in the dark with good headphones on when you are in a bad mood. This is music to scream out while you are shaking your fists in anger to. This is primal scream music you could burn a couch to.

OMNI ‘Multi—Task

I love bands that dabble in the post-punk pool and Atlanta’s OMNI didn’t just dabble, they breathe post-punk underwater. I liked their last album and I am really enjoying Multi-Task as well. Frankie Broyles, used to be in Deerhunter another band I like. When I say that they are post-punk, they definitely align closer to Television (or a really relaxed DEVO) than they do to say Joy Division.

Chelsea Wolfe ‘Hiss Spun’

It has been a couple of years since Chelsea Wolfe’s album Abyss made my best of list. She has a really great vocal instrument for the Gothic and operatic metal she and her backing band crank out. Her music reminds me a bit of something Maynard from Tool might concoct (and I could see some really interesting potential for collaboration between them) but her voice is much better than his (don’t get me wrong, his stylings were perfect for what Tool were doing).

Okay, that is a bunch of music to keep you busy this weekend. Explore, Enjoy, and Share Music!
