A review with brevity (if not wit)
“Hostiles,” is first and foremost (as you see in the above poster), a play on perspectives and words.
The hostiles are us and we are all hostiles.
Hmm…Okay (not sure that was breaking news) and I didn’t much like the rest of what Hostiles had to offer.
Hostiles is like “Saving Private Ryan” but an end of the war version in which a group of conflicted German soldiers were sent by Hitler to “find” Ryan.
Hostiles is like one of Tarantino’s counterfactual histories but a history where the same American soldiers responsible for the Native Genocide reclaim the American West back from white settlers for the Natives (often using deadly force).
Despite this, for some reason, Entertainment Weekly apparently said:
“Hostiles is the best Western since Unforgiven”
Which I guess could be true…if you totally spaced out and forgot that all of these other Westerns were released after Unforgiven:
The Revenant
Appaloosa
True Grit
Django Unchained
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
