A Few Notes on Saturday’s Debacle and the State of the Program

Not only did Mark Dantonio thoroughly out coach Jim Harbaugh Saturday night, Michigan State’s head football coach had the smack-talking moment of this year’s version of the rivalry as well.

After the game, he said (about Michigan):

“They are extremely well-coached, they ran 40 different formations in the first half.”

Ouch…Not only was that a brutal slam but it also perfectly summed up the state of Michigan on offense, all sizzle and very little steak.

What happened?

  • We did not commit to the run. During the first series, the run was really working. During the second series, the run was really working. During the third series, we stopped running the ball. It seemed like for long stretches of the game, the play-callers totally forgot that Karan Higdon and (at times) Chris Evans were pretty effective (or at least more effective than the passing game). On the other hand, could the fumbles and blocking mistakes have something to do with a 1st time RB Coach named Harbaugh?
