I didn’t like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Will you like it?

If you turn off your brain and concentrate only on the calculated stream of “spontaneous” fun between the lead actors you might have a good time at this movie.

The Rock is a funny guy

Kevin Hart is a funny guy

Jack Black is….well Jack Black is Jack Black (as always, only this time doing a cloying impression of a woman trapped in a man’s body).

If you, conversely, make the mistake of leaving your brain turned on (as I did), your will find yourself praying to the ghost of John Hughes for more “Breakfast Club” and less “Jungle”

This is a movie that reduces each of Hughes beloved and well-developed Breakfast Club archetypal characters to insultingly shallow cartoon caricatures:

  • Instead of the “jock” who was in torment over having participated in a brutal hazing we are given a jock who hired an old friend to do his homework for him.
  • Instead of the “princess” who is dealing with a father who loves her only with money and whose popularity covers up her unhappiness we are given a princess who can’t imagine life without her smart phone (the most…
