Not the best 48 hours for anyone rooting for world peace
So, during his UN General Assembly speech, just a few minutes after announcing the new 700 billion dollar defense package (an 80 billion dollar increase over last year) President Donald Trump listed the following countries that the United States could have issues with:
North Korea
Iraq
Iran
Syria
Afghanistan
Venezuela
Cuba
Hezbollah
ISIS
<note, he first made sure to note that we have no interest in imposing our will on any other nations and then proceeded to move to this list nations and sub-national groups we can’t wait to impose our will on #unintentionalirony>
That is a pretty long list of enemies to call out after getting a massive new war chest. In other words, why are we ‘loaded for bear’ unless we are planning to shit in the woods (pardon my French). Not to mention, President Trump hasn’t really distinguished himself as the kind of guy who invests in the long game (deterrence).
Lots of people are noting the hypocrisy of a GOP Senate that uses cost as an excuse to roll back food stamps and health care while, at the same time, working on passing tax cuts for the rich and adding almost 100 billion dollars to the defense budget. Yup, that is really ridiculous, but lets not fool ourselves this is going to come with another war too (and a war where many of these same poor folks who can’t afford health insurance or food choose to join the military).
And before someone tells me about all the threats we face lets just remember we already spend more on our military than the next eight countries combined.
I am not saying it will be a nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula. But get ready for something, and if it ends up being in North Korea don’t say I didn’t warn you.
