I know a large number of people who work with victims that I deeply respect. Unfortunately, too often the loudest voices in the “victim’s rights movement room” often pursue an agenda designed to erode the protections designed to ensure a fair trial.
Victim’s have the same Constitutional rights as everyone else, our rights are not victim’s rights or defendants rights, they are civil rights. I have certainly never read any part of the Constitution suggesting the right to make trials into forced choices between pursuing truth and ignoring victims feelings.
We have Constitutional protections designed to ensure a fair trial because we think, as a society, that we should hold freedom very dear and be incredibly cautious about incarcerating people.
