I believe that it is really important that rules penalize and reward teams for strategic decisions. The best example of a rule that is a total fail is the softball rule that allows a player to be removed and reinserted into the same game (no cost for choosing to remove someone from a game).

So, if you choose to leave someone on the floor who can’t shoot free throws, in my opinion, it is on the coach (for making a strategic decision) and not on the game or the league.

Does it make the game hard to watch at times, sure? But for an educated fan, I actually enjoy the tension created (how much longer will this coach allow the negative trade-off before making a change etc.).

Just my 2 cents (oddly enough I once had a Twitter conversation with David Aldridge about this several years ago, he seems like a very nice fellow).
