Could Qyburn Make Westeros Dragon-Free Again?
One of my biggest frustrations with the Game of Thrones show is how it totally ignored Tyrion’s history with Dragons.
When I first saw that Tyrion was likely to align with Daenerys I was unbelievably excited both because I wanted Tyrion to finally have someone that would appreciate him and because Tyrion (at least the Tyrion of the books) knew more about Dragon Lore than any other person in Westeros.
One of the reasons I first loved Tyrion was that as a child he was obsessed with Dragons just like when I was a child I was obsessed with Whales (not sure why this made me feel connected to Tyrion but it did).
Anyway, because Tyrion was a Lannister, he had access to more of the core source materials on the history of Dragons than most other people (and most of the people who would have traditionally been concerned with learning Dragon lore stopped being interested after Dragons went extinct).
It would have made so much sense for Tyrion to help Daenerys with her to help her take care of and prepare her Dragons for combat. I was excited because the only woman on the planet with Dragons was being combined with the only expert on Dragon Lore on the planet (I thought it was finally going to be game on during that scene when Tyrion went down into the Dragon pit but sadly, no).
For some inexplicable reason, Benioff and Weiss never gave Tyrion any special knowledge about Dragons. Why not? Who knows. Anyway, most of what I am about to say I know because the Tyrion of the books told me and not because of the television show.
How can you kill her dragons?
How Can You Kill A Drogon (the Dragon)?
There are several methods for dispatching Dragons explained in the books, this is from memory, so if I miss one, apologies:
- Old Age (dragons can to be over 100 years old, maybe they can wait Drogon out?)
- Dragon on Dragon violence (Daenerys controls the only three Dragons in existence, so not much chance of this happening)
- Poisoning (Maester’s claim they killed off Dragon’s by disposing of them by poison)
- Drop a roof on them (Pretty sure one Dragon was killed when the roof of a Dragon Pit dropped on them, Daenerys has free-range Dragons so this probably won’t happen either)
- Siege Weapons (Bronn attempted to use Qyburn’s Scorpion to kill Drogon two weeks ago, but this method has been historically successful)
- Archers (Tyrion insisted that a Dragon’ deepest vulnerability is the eye and the brain, many Dragons died when an arrow, a spear <not recommended>, or a bolt from a siege weapon lodged in their eye)
- Belly stabbing (Tyrion insists this is Fake News and there is no evidence recorded in the books where a Dragon died by getting poked in the tummy)
My Prediction
Earlier this year I predicted that Qyburn would modify the bolts on his Scorpion siege weapons so that they can utilize wildfire tips. Dragon’s are totally invulnerable to fire (except, again, in their eyes) but I don’t remember anyone ever deploying wildfire against a Dragon. Even if I am wrong, it would be interesting to watch.
In other words, if you are going to take one Daenerys’ Dragons down, it should be done in spectacular fashion.
It isn’t the sexiest solution, but if I were Cersei I would find the best archers in King’s Landing and train them to aim for the eyes. From what I recall, even when siege weapons worked, they usually worked because they targeted the eyes successfully.
(Also, isn’t it about time Daenerys sends a Dragon attack against good old Euron’s fleet?)
