This week’s playlist

I put out weekly playlists. I use Spotify because I have an easy time finding most of the music I want to include is there (and I hope that I can make some bands that I like a few extra bucks).

Agitprop Planet Playlist #1 (The Details & Commentary)

I don’t think it is far off to equate the current administrations obsession with toughness as compensation for sexual dysfunction…the result could clearly end in Wargasm (I am about 65% convinced POTUS wants a war with Iran…not kidding).

  1. K., Cigarettes After Sex, Self-Titled (Partisan Records, 2017)

Funny how I find music, this one was recommended during an Amoeba “what’s in your bag” by Shirley Manson of Garbage. I like it, thanks Shirley.

2. Wargasm, Ministry, AmeriKKKant (Nuclear Blast, 2018)

I have been a Ministry fan since (Every Day it’s) Halloween way back in the 1980’s. Very happy to see them return to form (the new album is surprisingly good, you can read more from this review from my friend Aaron at Bearded Guy’s Music).

3. Nautical Depth, Czarface & M.F. Doom, Czarface meets Metal Face (Silver Age, 2018)

I am a total mark for MF Doom. If he rolls something out I am going to listen. Excited to check this whole album out soon.

4. Blockbuster Night Part 1, Run The Jewels, Run The Jewels 2 (Mass Appeal Records, 2014)

RTJ2 is one of my favorite albums of the last decade without prefix, suffix, or apology. Not as hot on RTJ3 but I hope whatever they do next will be amazing (also can’t forget El-P was part of that great Cannibal Ox album). Killer Mike is one of the people I look up to in an odd way (he speaks out even when what he is saying won’t be loved).

5. G Lollipops, Murs, A Strange Journey Into the Unimaginable (Strange Music Inc. 2018)

How great was that in the studio scene in this week’s episode of Atlanta? Maybe was the scene of the year. Really, the entire episode was pretty amazing. I am pretty sure I could get someone to break $100 on this Murs tune but I am not sure Glover could. In other news, the old school production on this track is what I was really drawn to (all that is missing is an 808 cowbell). Oh, also, happy birthday Murs (40).

6. Jet In Jungle, Damaged Bug, Cold Hot Plumbs (Castle Face Records, 2015)

Not sure where I found this one, but it fit well as a change of pace here. In addition, I have listened to it like ten times now and still am not entirely sure WTF they are talking about. Love the cover art too.

7. Black Habit, MIEN, Earth Moon (Rocket Recordings, 2018)

Nice post-punk feel but keeping a synth line between that last track and this one. Another song I just kind of came across randomly that fit pretty well here. I dig the insistence of the bass line.

8. American Guilt, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Single (Jagjaguwar, 2018)

They have a very cool post-T-Rex groove going here…Fuzzy, electric, spacey, garage-loving, but psychedelic goodness. In theory this announces a fourth album from this New Zealand band, but who knows for sure.

9. 77, Alice Bag, Blueprint (Don Giovani, 2018)

Welcome Back Alice Bag!!!! Don’t have too much more to say here except that I will include her new video below too.

10. Meant To Be, Marmozets, Knowing What You Know Now (Roadrunner Records, 2018)

I literally know nothing about this band. They were recommended in one of my hundreds of Google Alerts, so I checked them out, and had this song in my pool of songs that I might fit in to a playlist. Good stuff.

11. Excuse Generator, Lithics, Mating Surfaces (Kill Rock Stars, 2018)

True story, I loved the first album by Lithics so much that I wrote Kill Rock Stars in 2016 and asked why they hadn’t signed them. Well guess what Kill Rock Stars are now the label for the second album by this excellent Portland band (not kidding I reposted the tweet when it was announced, not claiming credit as much as happy it happened). I am really looking forward to the new album and if you want more, I would heartily recommend their last album (Borrowed Floors).

12. You Can Call Me Allocator, Casper Skulls, Mercy Works (Buzz Records, 2017)

Another band that was in my bin somewhere waiting to find a home on a playlist. I need to do some more reading on them so I can tell you more about them in the future but this is a GREAT song (one of my favorites on the playlist) :).

13. Can’t Front On Me, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, Mecca and the Soul Brother (Elektra Records, 1992)

My friend Steve used to wear this album OUT back in the day when we both lived in Tempe Arizona, so it was nice to find a place for some Peter Rock &C.L. Smooth on a playlist. Sometimes you can go home again. This song is a stone cold classic.

14. Riddles, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, Riddles (Carpark Records, 2018)

This song represents one heck of a long journey from some of the almost industrial + screamo performance art of earlier ESMB music. Don’t get me wrong, I totally loved that stuff too (Dan Deacon was involved somewhere here too).

Oh, and here is that cool 9 to 5 themed Alice Bag Video (can you name all the cameos?):
