But Don’t Let My Cynicism Get in the Way of a Good Conspiracy Theory

I know it is much more fun to run with political theater, but, most likely, the Mr. Epstein’s death was actually a suicide. I am not saying it is impossible that he could have been killed, only that such a result is unlikely given the facts.

Many of you will be shocked to hear this. Especially after a full day of the media going crazy about this story. …

An Orange Is the New Black Fact Check

Many times shows create situations that are not entirely accurate in order to move the plot along, In the case of Orange Is the New Black, the writers <clearly> wanted to get Piper out of prison for the final act of the show (the final season arrived on Netflix yesterday).

At the end of season six, as the result of overcrowding, Litchfield prison decided to give people who met certain criteria “early releases” and Piper (after some subterfuge) was one of the people allowed to leave incarceration early.

In reality, this could…

Episode 58 of the Decarceration Nation Podcast

I first met Rob Perez at the Celebration of Second Chances event in Lexington Kentucky hosted by the US Justice Action Network. He is the owner, with his wife Diane, of DV8 Kitchen which is staffed entirely by people in recovery (many of whom are formerly incarcerated).

Now, as you likely know by now, my personal belief is that training for reentry and new employment should start day one whenever someone enters prison (or jail). …

Considering Tyrion’s Season 8 Episode 4 speech to Cersei in context

HBO

*Spoiler Alert*

Most of the last several seasons of Game of Thrones has been occupied by Benioff and Weiss turning Tyrion Lannister from an incredibly strategic and entertaining drunk into an incredibly stupid and annoying teetotaler.

Let’s face it, since he joined forces with Daenerys, he has come up with or supported some of the most absurd and doomed plans in the history of Westeros (does anyone else, for instance, remember that time when Tyrion insisted that they split their forces so they could take Casterly Rock back from…

Who had the dumbest moment of “Winterfell”

HBO

Look, it is hard to blame characters for writers and showrunners who have reduced them from full-bodied characters full of motivations and deep backstories down to caricatures.

At the same time, someone has to have had the dumbest moment of episode one, here are my nominees

Runner-Up: Euron Greyjoy

And no, it does not involve joining the fight at Winterfell

HBO

Warning, I will be discussing theories based on events that have already occurred on the show *spoiler alert*

As much as I hate to say it, of late, there is really only one person playing chess in Westeros (and a BUNCH of people playing checkers) and that person really likes to ‘mean mug’ and drink wine.

So, what might Cersei be up to?

Part One: The Baby

One thing that is pretty shocking is that despite years of experience and legendary lore about Cersei, so many characters take her at face value.

It…

Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls

(this is a slightly modified version of one part my recap of Season 8 Episode 1 “Winterfell”)

If I have one consistent criticism of Benioff and Weiss it is that they are addicted to sacrificing story, logic, and character motivation to deliver spectacle.

Of course everyone wants to see Jon riding a dragon, but should it also have to make sense? I think so.

At the end of the episode, in the post-episode mini-Documentary, Benioff (or Weiss, I can barely tell them apart) suggests that since only Targaryen’s can ride dragons, Jon should have known he…

Pease Stop calling people “Felons”

Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

I was getting tired of turning on the television every night only to hear yet another pundit describe another HUMAN BEING as a “convicted felon.”

But Josh? The dictionary definition is “someone who committed a felony?”

First, that means you are defining someone — entirely defining them — by ONLY a crime they committed…That is NOT okay.

Second, the superstructure of mass incarceration rests on the language that justifies treating human beings as objects of ‘deserved’ punishment. …
